The Power of Public Food Procurement. The transformative potential of school meals for children aged 1-16

On the 17th and 18th of June 2024, the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP), the Municipality of Copenhagen and Roskilde University within the framework of the EU Horizon 2020 Food Trails project and the Cities Feeding the Future Initiative organise the conference ‘The Power of Public Food Procurement’.

The two-day conference will explore the pivotal role of cities in shaping sustainable food systems, along with the impact that every meal served has on the well-being, education, and future of our children. As Copenhagen leads the charge in public procurement for school meals, the city will share insights, spark dialogue, and pave the way for a healthier, more sustainable future.

Food policy officers will gain skills and tools to maximise opportunities for using public food procurement as a lever for more sustainable food systems and healthy school meals. By targeting officers and stakeholders responsible for meals of schoolchildren aged 1-16, the conference offers a unique platform for meeting fellow participants engaged in food governance, policymaking, innovation, sustainable food procurement, and supply chains.

Through a series of technical workshops, extensive research of food policy studies, debates and field visits, the conference will take a deep dive into the world of sustainable meals programmes, unveiling how this service serves as a catalyst for change. From nourishing young minds with nutritious meals to fostering a culture of sustainability and community, discover how school meals are reshaping the future of food, one bite at a time.
